Debenhams occupies more than 25 per cent of Ayr Central's total floorspace |
Henry Boot Developments' 350,000 sq ft Ayr Central sees its 85,000-sq ft anchor tenant, Debenhams, opening its doors to shoppers this week. The store trades over two floors and has an off-site warehouse in Newbridge near Edinburgh with the store itself only having a small stockroom.
By Debenhams' standards this is a relatively modestly-sized store, the majority of its new stores top 100,000 sq ft, but it occupies more than 25 per cent of the scheme's available space.
The £75m centre will be the largest shopping development to open in Scotland this year and is seeing the light of day in two phases with Debenhams, Next and H&M all trading from this week. The rest of the development is due to be unveiled on the 17th of April.
Unusually for a new centre, the mall is in the middle of the town, with the rail station being less than 100 yds distant and a catchment within a 30-mile radius put at 1.4m.
The developer claims that Ayr Central will raise the level of shoppers visiting the town from 136,000 to 240,000 a week rising to more than 300,000 in the summer months.
Beneath the development lies a 495 space single-level car park.
