Plans for the future of Basildon town centre were unveiled last week at the town's eponymously named Basildon Centre. The move marks the beginning of a two-week public consultation at the Eastgate Centre and is aimed at highlighting a development framework for Basildon put together by external consultants.
Key proposals contained within the framework are the creation of a modern and "welcoming" entrance for the town, a greater mix of uses for the town centre, including new homes, and a network of high quality pedestrian and cycle routes as well as new public and green spaces.
Hans Wustefeld, general manager of the British Land-owned Eastgate centre said: "These plans are actually still quite a few years away; in 2012. We are planning a refreshment of the centre, starting this year and will keep on going. We won't be waiting until then."
A spokesman for Basildon Renaissance said: "We are working with British Land to think of ways in which we can work in partnership with them."
