What do shoppers say?

The Prime Minister has predicted further austerity and retrenchment for 2012. Yet according to research carried out by ROI Team in late 2011 younger shoppers are challenging that view. Amongst shoppers aged between 16 and 34 almost as many expect to ‘shop more and spend more’ in 2012 as expect to tighten their belts.

The What do Shoppers Say? survey of 201 shoppers, interview by ROI Team in The Marlands, Southampton and The Howgate, Falkirk, found almost half of shoppers in ACORN’s ‘moderate means’ and ‘hard pressed’ segments expect to tighten their belts in 2012; whereas among young urban professionals (‘urban prosperity’) as many as a quarter expect to spend more freely in 2012.

Andrew McCall, managing director of ROI Team said: “The UK’s retailers have done a fantastic job in keeping the economy out of recession. This survey suggests that, although the window gets ever narrower, there are still chinks of light for retailers to target in 2012.”
