Post-Christmas surge at Hammerson

Hammerson’s portfolio of prime shopping centres saw a 6 per cent surge in footfall in the post-Christmas period
Hammerson’s portfolio of prime shopping centres has attracted more than 2.5 million consumers over the three days after Christmas, an increase of 6 per cent over the same period in 2010.
The 27th December was the busiest shopping day with over 900,000 people visiting Hammerson’s portfolio of ten regional shopping centres.
InLondon, many customers left Christmas shopping to the last minute. Brent Cross enjoyed its busiest ever pre Christmas trading day on 23 December, as well its busiest Christmas Eve on record with 135,000 people visiting over the two days. The centre also enjoyed its busiest ever Boxing Day attracting 65,000 people, an increase of 27 per cent on the previous year.
In Scotland,Union Square in Aberdeen, saw footfall increases of 36, 15 and 10 per cent for Boxing Day, 27th and 28th December respectively with big ticket items such as laptop computers, flat screen televisions and tablet computers proving particularly popular.
At WestQuay in Southampton, over 55,000 people visited the centre on Boxing Day, an increase of 43 per cent compared to 2010.
David Atkins, chief executive of Hammerson said: “Despite pressure on household budgets we have seen some exceptional trading across our centres over the Christmas period. With Christmas day falling on a Sunday, many customers left shopping to the last minute, however, the momentum has continued. Centres across the country have been reporting record breaking numbers of visitors looking to take advantage of Boxing Day sales”
