The Rock weaves history into Christmas light switch-on

Published:  09 November, 2011

The Rock, Bury is set to reveal a historical theme to its spectacular ‘Glitter Ball’ - its Christmas light switch-on event on Thursday 17 November.

The Glitter Ball will showcase light decorations reflecting the innovations that made Bury a booming town during the Industrial Revolution.

Produced by Keighley-based LDJ Design and Display, the Christmas decorations were designed in conjunction with local students from Holy Cross Sixth Form College and University Centre, Bury.

One of Bury’s most influential inventions, The Flying Shuttle, will be transformed into a Christmas light decoration, reflecting the town’s famous textile industry.

Nikki Kitchen, marketing manager at The Rock, said: “Bury is steeped in history and we wanted to reflect its mix of rich heritage and innovations, as well as looking to the future. We were also really pleased to have inspiration and design ideas from our local students.”

The Glitter Ball will also incorporate a bid to break the record for the world’s largest disco ball, which stands eight metres in diameter, with a 25m circumference.
