They were also invited to join the International Green Heroes, an elite group of environmental achievers who use their experience to raise awareness of green issues.

In 2007, Church Square identified a number of initiatives to maximize recycling, including  a system to allow shoppers to dispose of general waste, and recycle plastic bags and cans on site. Other initiatives included installing lux sensors and timers, 42 solar panels and adopting a new waste management system (complete with on-site cardboard and plastic baler).

Based on 2006/2007, 3 per cent of 350 tonnes of waste was recycled Following the new waste management system there has been a 100 per cent reduction in waste to landfill.

Centre manager, Steven Brogan, said: “As a result of this project, Church Square has reduced its environmental impact significantly, successfully demonstrating that it is improving its waste and environmental management by identifying clearly defined disposal routes, thus having an overall impact on the environment, workplace, economy and community.  By using a local facility for renewable energy, waste has reduced by 97 per cent to 0 per cent.”
