Capital Shopping Centres has started public consultation on its plans to extend Lakeside, Thurrock

The new plans for Lakeside include 30 - 40 new shops, new flagship stores and an integrated transport hub As one of Britain’s busiest shopping destinations, the centre is continuing to evolve to better meet the needs of customers, businesses and the local community.

Capital Shopping Centres is asking local residents and shoppers to give their views at a public exhibition in the centre and these views will inform the outline planning application which CSC proposes to submit later this year.

CSC highlights the benefits the plan will deliver, including 1,000 construction jobs and 2,500 jobs once the development is complete, with indirect support for a further 700 jobs in the area through wage and supplier spending. The extension, whch CSC says meets the development aspirations of Thurrock Borough Council, will also lead to improvements in public transport infrastructure

Paul Lancaster, general manager of Lakeside, said: “Lakeside has served the community for the past 21 years, and we’re very excited about this new development. This development will allow us to introduce new brands and widen our offer to customers. The proposed integrated transport hub will make using public transport easier, with shorter and sheltered links between bus and rail.

“This Ł180m project is a major statement of our confidence in Lakeside and we hope it will further raise the profile of Thurrock for other businesses. Capital Shopping Centres’ similar projects such as Metrocentre in Gateshead and Newcastle’s Eldon Square have been very successful in stimulating their local economies.”
