Primark boosts footfall by 20 per cent at Merseyway

Stockport’s Merseyway shopping centre has enjoyed a 19 per cent rise in footfall on last year’s visitor levels, taking it to 25 per cent above the North West average.

The centre’s managing agent GVA has put the increase down to Primark which opened a 47,500 sq ft store in early September, on top of sturdy footfall throughout the summer.

Mark Rawstron, senior director at GVA in Manchester said: “New investment in the centre has clearly resulted in people returning to Merseyway for the first time. The arrival of Primark was obviously a major coup and boosted that upward trend.

“Retail is facing difficult and well-documented challenges but it’s pleasing and encouraging to note that the Merseyway figures are above the national and the regional averages. We now look forward to a busy autumn and Christmas period.”

Primark follows recent lettings by River Island, Deichman Shoes and Costa.
