Over 15,000 students flock to Meadowhall for lock-in event

Published:  03 October, 2011

Over 15,000 students descended on Meadowhall on Thursday to attend one of the UK’s biggest ever student lock-in shopping events.

Meadowhall retailers organised an exclusive range of discounts for students, with a number of stores offering up to 30 per cent off during the evening, and giveaways including Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Entertainment on the evening included dance classes with Rationale street dance and Stepz Dance Academy, a mad hatters’ tea party at Fancie cupcakes, local designers customising Toms at Office shoes and free makeovers at the Body Shop.

Social media played a key role in the lock-in with thousands of students pre-registering their attendance online. Meadowhall’s Twitter feed also started to buzz in the lead up to the event, with hoards of students continuing to Tweet about their attendance throughout the evening. The entire lock-in was filmed for Meadowhall TV and will be published on Meadowhall’s You Tube site - and pictures are now on Facebook for students to re-live their evening.

Gemma Noble, communications executive at Meadowhall, said: “Sheffield is a popular choice for students so we wanted to mark the start of the new academic year with a grand gathering.

“We’re delighted to have welcomed so many students to the centre for the Lock In event and hope that they are delighted with the deals they managed to pick up! The event has proved such a success we are already planning for next year’s event.”
