Westfield Stratford City is the first UK shopping centre to be presented with a prestigious award from ‘Secured by Design’ for the design and construction of the 1.9m sq ft retail and leisure destination, due to be the largest urban shopping centre in Europe and gateway to the Olympic Park when it opens on 13th September 2011.

‘Secured by Design’ focuses on crime prevention at the design, layout and construction stages of homes and commercial premises and promotes the use of security standards for a wide range of applications and products.

Westfield Stratford City has also received an award from the Park Mark Safer Parking Scheme which is aimed at reducing both crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities.

Westfield has gone beyond these set requirements to include the next chapter of technology and infrastructure showing their commitment to the safety and security of their customers, staff and retailers enabling them to achieve such an impressive award.

Chief Inspector Phil Maddock from the Protective Security Command, Metropolitan Police Service said: "The Metropolitan Police Service, together with our security partners has worked closely with Westfield to reach this impressive achievement in security design. Westfield Stratford City has raised the protective security bar for future major developments.”

In other news, Westfield Stratford City has teamed up with the WideAware and WorldHost training programmes to deliver specialised training for the centre’s 31-strong concierge team.

WideAware will provide Westfield with a single-unit, interactive online training tool to support concierge staff when providing assistance to disabled shoppers while WorldHost will train the concierge team in customer service across cultures and to assist visitors to the UK in the best possible way.

Westfield Stratford City contains 300 retailers, over 70 places to dine and includes a 17 screen-all digital-Vue Cinema, 14 lane All Star Lanes bowling alley, a 65,000 sq ft Aspers Casino and three hotels.
