New dawn for Salford Shopping Centre

Published:  02 September, 2011

The owners of Salford shopping centre, Salford Estates, have submitted a planning application to Salford City Council to extend the centre, delivering more shops and improving customers’ shopping experience.

Salford Estates, which bought the centre in 2010, has submitted plans to extend it with the addition of 13 new double-height, modern shop units to accommodate a wider range of retailers.

A new modern Market Hall will also be provided for the existing market traders and will replace the existing market which, in its current location, is isolated, in a poor state of repair and is consequently under-utilised by the traders.  To ensure the design of the new Market Hall is fit for purpose, Salford Estates has been working closely with the Federation of Market Traders on the design of the new space.

The expansion plans require the long-awaited closure of Pendleton Way.  The closure of this road will create a traffic free pedestrian square that could be used for a range of community activities.  The road closure will also make it possible to introduce specific environmental improvements, such as the provision of new high quality paving, planting and attractive seating areas.

Debbie Illingworth on behalf of Salford Estates said: “These changes will transform the shopping experience at the centre.  Big brand retailers demand modern, double height shops and by providing these together with some smaller units and significantly improved space for the market traders we can expand the range of shops on offer in areas like sports and fashion.

“We are focused on moving forward from the recent events in and around Salford Shopping Centre and are wholly committed to the long-term future and prosperity of the Centre and being part of its success.

Salford Estates has the financial resources to deliver the redevelopment and in doing so create 300 new full and part time jobs for local people and bring about this much-needed investment and significant change in the area.”

It is expected that the application will be determined by Salford City Council in November.
