M&S to anchor mothballed Bradford scheme

Published:  28 July, 2011

Marks & Spencer has signed for a 60,000 sq ft anchor unit at Bradford city centre’s stalled Broadway shopping centre.

Westfield halted the scheme’s construction in 2008 but is expected to submit planning proposals to the local council on Thursday for a smaller, revised scheme.

The £275m project covers 550,000 sq ft with two anchor tenants and 75 shops in total. There were 100 units in the original plans.

The developer wants to secure further pre-lets before beginning construction, including the second anchor tenant, but could be on site within the next 12 months.

Peter Miller, chief operating officer at Westfield, is reported to have said: "There has been strong interest from retailers who are keen to take space in the scheme and we look forward to announcing further signings in the near future."
