British Land launch Community Charter
Published: 27 July, 2011
British Land launched its first Community Charter at a breakfast briefing with guest speaker Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. Through the Charter, British Land has made ten commitments to the communities in which its major UK properties and developments are located.
Each of these commitments aims to ensure a strong and consistent approach to understanding local needs and developing long-term community relationships.
Jim Harris, centre manager at St Stephen’s shopping centre said: “St Stephen’s plays a key role in supporting community activities, from organising fundraising events to supporting local organisations, such as the Global Entrepreneurship Week. Since 2007, some 100 unemployed young people have participated in our successful ‘Get into Retail’ programme. As a result of two week’s training and work experience, almost 70 per cent of the applicants have gone on to positive outcomes such as employment, education and volunteering.
“This new Community Charter will help guide our future efforts in this regard, ensuring that we continue to be the best neighbour that we can be. I look forward to working with my colleagues to build on our successful track record.”
Glasgow Fort shopping park and Meadowhall, both of which run similar employment schemes, will also benefit their communities further with the help of the Charter.
