Debenhams is to open a 50, 881 sq ft store in the new Carlow Central development in Carlow town, according to developers Lexeme Retail Property Group.
The new development will comprise almost 200,000 sq ft of retail space with approximately 34 shops in addition to the two anchors and 800 car parking spaces. It is expected that construction will start later this year with completion expected at the end of 2013.
Debenhams will trade alongside Penneys (Primark) which has committed to the main anchor store and will occupy 65,015 sq ft. The €50m redevelopment, on the site of the old Quinsworth and Penneys shops, will rejuvenate the heart of Carlow town.
Karl Stewart, retail director of DTZ Sherry FitzGerald, who negotiated the deal on behalf of the developers Lexeme Retail Property Group, said: “The commitment by Debenhams to a further store in Ireland is not only a welcome boost to the local Carlow market but a significant step in bringing confidence back to the Irish retail market which has taken a considerable hit in the last number of years.”
Ian McMillan of Ian McMillan Associates who represented Debenhams, added: “The decision by Debenhams on the Carlow store follows on from the recent announcement that they are to locate at another store in Sligo, demonstrates their belief in the future of retailing in Ireland.”
