Retail footprint 2011
Published: 20 June, 2011
CACI has released its annual ranking of the UK’s top retail destinations, which underlines the continuing success of London’s West End, Westfield London and other urban centres.
The top ten shopping centres by forecast spend remain unchanged, although London’s West End has accelerated its lead and Birmingham (in third place) has narrowed the gap with Glasgow (in second). Outside the top ten, Bristol, Cardiff and Croydon have all slipped three places.
Paul Langston, consulting partner for location strategy, CACI said: “London’s West End remains well out in front but Westfield London has seen the greatest growth in forecast spend at almost 7 per cent. Looking ahead, the capital’s retail scene is set for a shake-up from the redevelopment of Stratford this September. Meanwhile, the slides of Cardiff and Croydon reflect an ongoing squeeze from a strong combination of supermarkets and nearby retail parks.
“The two big climbers come from new developments opened in the past 12 months. The Rock has allowed Bury to jump 59 places to 126 in the rankings and Trinity Walk’s opening means that Wakefield has climbed 48 places. These have been a significant factor in neighbouring rivals Bolton slipping nine places and Rochdale, which has been hit even harder, dropping 29 places to 194.”
