Pedal power at Manchester Arndale

Published:  17 June, 2011

Staff at Manchester Arndale are about to hit the road with pedal power as they undertake a challenging trip to Blackpool and back in aid of charity.

A team of seven cyclists made up of staff from the security team, Manchester Arndale Market and HMV will leave the centre at 5am tomorrow to raise money for local charity Francis House Children’s Hospice.

The bike enthusiasts are aiming to complete the 96 mile round-trip by 5pm the same day and have been training over the last 12 months for the challenge. Last year they cycled to Blackpool for charity but wanted to go one better this year and added the return trip.

Security supervisor Derek Wilson, said: “We are hoping to raise over £2,500 this year and have been cycling into work over the last 12 months as part of our training programme. It will be quite a challenge but we are confident we can do it. Cycling has now become part of our lifestyles and it means not only do we save money, get fit and contribute to Manchester Arndale’s green travel plan but we are also doing something worthwhile for charity.”
