ICSC salutes Westfield London and SouthGate

Two UK centres pick up ICSC Awards in Paris ceremony
The International Council of Shopping Centers has selected 11 shopping centres from nine countries across Europe as winners of the 2011 European Shopping Centre Awards.
In the Very Large New Development category the winner was Westfield London, developed by Westfield and Commerz Real and designed by Westfield, Buchan Group and Gabellini Sheppard.
Westfield London is a mixed-use development including residential, 14-screen cinema, commercial, gym and community library as well as retail including a luxury precinct ‘The Village’ and over 50 eating concepts.
And in the Large New Development category a comeendation went to SouthGate, Bath which was developed by Multi Development and Aviva Investors and designed by Chapman Taylor Partners
The successful urban regeneration of SouthGate comprises six buildings set out as pedestrian streets and a public square with connections to transportation hubs, including a new interchange and refurbished Bath Spa railway station.
2011 awards jury chair, Biljana Pehrsson, deputy CEO & head of real estate at East Capital Private Equity, said: “Despite the economic downturn and projects being developed during the worst time possible, we congratulate the award-winning investors and developers sticking to their original ideas and struggling hard to reach their goals, not allowing shortcuts or changes to jeopardise long term commercial success. These centres are clear examples of the continued efforts of the retail and shopping centre industry to thrive during recession.”
