Training helps to save a life at Metrocentre

The importance of training in the workplace was highlighted at Metrocentre recently when bus station manager Ivan Corbett saved a baby’s life with skills he learnt on a three day first aid course.
The two month old baby had stopped breathing on board a bus at the centre’s public transport interchange. Taking the baby, who was not breathing and had turned blue, from her mother’s arms Ivan quickly carried her into the bus station, laid her in the recovery position and followed steps he had been taught to clear her airways.
“People have been coming up to me and saying how I saved the baby’s life and if I hadn’t done what I did, she would have died,” Ivan said. “It hadn’t really sunk in until then. I am so pleased I was in the right place at the right time.”
Tim Lamb, Metrocentre general manager said “Metrocentre has always recognised the importance of training staff in First Aid, as well as other areas, and incidents such as this highlight just how valuable it can be. In this instance Ivan’s quick thinking along with the skills he learned on the training course and assistance from other members of our team really did help to save a life.”
Metrocentre staff are regularly trained in courses including CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator use and fire training, which is mandatory.
