The Light celebrates its 10th anniversary
Published: 13 April, 2011
The Light celebrates ten years of being a part of Leeds’ shopping and leisure scene.
Designed by DLG Architects, The Light opened its doors to shoppers back in November 2001, when it was originally owned and managed by HBOS, and has since welcomed 47 million visitors.
The building lies partially within the former Leeds Permanent Building Society - a grade II listed building - where old and new structures are drawn together to give an ‘outside-in’ feel.
Today The Light, which remains the only mixed-use scheme in Leeds, is managed by Capita Symonds and owned by AEGON UK Property Fund who acquired the centre in 2007.
It is home to a total of 31 stores, a 4-star luxury hotel, 13-screen Vue cinema, health club and a 400-space award winning car park, currently leased to Q-Parks. New restaurant ‘Zizzi’s’ is set to open on May 16.
To help celebrate The Light’s birthday the centre is planning to host a live music festival, ‘Switched on’, on Saturday 28 May. The event will see 12 unsigned bands playing throughout the day and visitors can enjoy a hog roast and real ales courtesy of Ilkley Brewery. £4 from every ticket sold will be donated to Browning House, a local children’s charity.
