Westfield unveils Merry Hill plans

Merry Hill Centre has announced multi-million pound plans to bring the ‘hill’ back to Dudley

The centre - built in the 1980s on the grounds of the last working urban farm within the Midlands – plans to recreate the rural appeal of the local area by building a hilly outcrop with a walkway into the centre.

Merry Hill believes that the new hill will provide an exciting addition to the Black Country tourism map, attracting visitors from far and wide who will come to see unique views of the surrounding area.

Merry Hill also hopes that the hill will attract local wildlife and create a recreational area for ramblers to enjoy, as well as providing a beautiful new access into the shopping centre.

The plans are certainly ambitious involving the movement of about 500,000 tonnes of boulders and topsoil. It is hoped the work will be completed by the end of 2012.

Kelly Reed, marketing manager for Merry Hill said: “More than 20 years after the centre was created, it now has the opportunity to become a top tourism attraction for the Black Country and the wider Midlands region. By building this iconic natural structure, we aim to give visitors a unique vista of the local area.”
