Young and old unite at Eldon Square’s 50s revival

Published:  10 March, 2011

There was a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on in Eldon Square in Newcastle as dancers from different generations came together to celebrate the Fabulous 50s.

A 1950s themed dance and film project has unified both young and old dancers, culminating in a public performance of work in the heart of the city.

The project was born when members of the ‘Utter Legends’ – young people who regularly meet up with friends in Eldon Square – approached Eldon Square’s Operations Manager Patsie Beaton for support. “I was totally overwhelmed by the dedication of this group of young people and asked them to consider working will Eldon Square on a project,” she explains. “They came up with dance and fashion from the 50s which we thought had fabulous potential. We were able to provide rehearsal space in-centre on Saturdays.

“In addition, we’ve had great support from our retailers who have been only too pleased to help with costumes, make-up and dressing of the event. The project has captured the hearts of everyone who has been involved, and it’s very gratifying to see two generations coming together in one fantastic event of this nature.”
