Free orchestra performance is music to shoppers’ ears

A new Manchester-based orchestra group of young musicians performed its first ever grand-scale performance at Manchester Arndale shopping centre.
Kaleidoscope Orchestra is made up of 28 young musicians who are all in their early twenties. The lunch-time free performance was held in the centre’s Halle Square during the half-term break for shoppers and passers-by to enjoy the sounds of classical music.
Playing three performances starting at midday, the conductor first introduced each piece and answered any questions before the rehearsal and then performance. The group played the Marriage of Figaro and Symphony No. 40 by Mozart and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.
Glen Barkworth, general manager for Manchester Arndale said: “We thought it was such a unique idea so were more than happy for Kaleidoscope to come and play for our visitors. Bringing classical music to a shopping centre environment breaks down the rules of convention and makes it more accessible for all. As it is half-term holidays I am sure many children also enjoyed this wonderful classical performance – it might even inspire some budding future musicians.”
