Hempstead Valley extension approved

Outline planning approval has been granted by Medway Council to create an additional 70,000 sq ft of commercial space and carry out redevelopment work at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre
National practice DLG Architects has proposed new retail and catering space through extension of the existing building footprint and the demolition of smaller units which no longer meet tenant requirements. The proposals also include additional community uses at the centre and a much improved public transport interchange.
The new proposals are designed to fulfil local expectations, retain strong footfall and deliver landlord aspirations to improve and modernise the centre to maintain strong tenancy.
DLG partner Jill Rayson said: “Our plans include the creation of a new public open space overlooked by a range of shops, cafes and community facilities as well as bus waiting and taxi drop off areas. An important aspect of the project is to provide more opportunities for events and promotions to attract all generations of the local Medway population.
“The replacement of an enclosed mall with an open, sheltered ‘street’ will transform the character of the south side of the centre as well as reducing the energy consumption of the existing air conditioned spaces.”
