Hammerson says footfall was up 40 per cent year-on-year on 27 December

Hammerson, which saw bad weather close it Brent Cross centre on the Saturday before Christmas, has reported record footfall in the post-Christmas period. On Monday 27 December footfall at the North London centre as up was up nearly 60 year-on-year with the centre welcoming close to 90,000 consumers, a record in its 34 years of trading.

Bullring in Birmingham saw 203,000 shoppers head to the sales on the 27th achieving an increase of 54 per cent on the previous year and an additional 200,000 shoppers on the 28th. The Oracle in Reading had its busiest Christmas Eve in five years and footfall on the 27th December was up 37 per cent on 2009.

Hammerson chief executive David Atkins said: “We have seen some exceptional trading across our centres over the Christmas period. “The December bank holidays are traditionally robust trading days for us. The festive sales period this year, with Boxing Day falling on a Sunday, followed by bank holidays on Monday and Tuesday has given customers a three-day shopping window which they have made the most of.”
