Giant aluminium reindeer installed at Metrocentre

Published:  01 December, 2010

Metrocentre, Gateshead has installed a giant festive reindeer – standing as tall as a house and weighing the equivalent of two fully grown elephants.

The structure - designed and built by north east company, Centre Design – is made from more than 2,000 metres of aluminium and adorned with 10,000 fairy lights and took a team of engineers five days to put it in place.

The reindeer is thought to be the largest sculpture of its kind in the UK, if not the world and visitors have been invited to name the reindeer for a chance to win a trip to Lapland.

Karen Carr, marketing manager at Metrocentre said: “We have been working on the theme of this year's Christmas decorations since January and this is the first time we have seen the reindeer at its full height as the Town Square is the only place big enough to put it on show – it looks incredible!

“Each mall has a different theme and we have chosen a scheme that is both contemporary and traditional, to appeal to the thousands of visitors who will be arriving at the centre over the coming months - we are confident that the decorations won't disappoint.”
