Eden Walk facelift on the cards

Published:  01 October, 2010

Proposals are taking shape to improve and revitalise Eden Walk shopping centre in Kingston-upon-Thames.

The owners Eden Walk Shopping Centre General Partner (EWSCGP) plan to update the area which was built in two stages during the 1960s and 1970s by renovating the frontage, modernising the signage and lighting and creating a new anchor store at the Union Street entrance.

A spokesperson for EWSCGP said: “The units are too small and the centre is dark and enclosed. Someone once described it as the ”back end of beyond”. It’s dated, difficult to let and in dire need of a refurbishment.”

The planning application for phase 1 is expected to be handed over to the council at the end of October with phase 2 following in December. If the scheme is given the go ahead work is expected to start early next year and completed by the end of 2012.

Retailers at Eden Walk include Marks & Spencer, Boots, Sainsbury’s, H& M and Habitat but many of the 28 units are either empty or temporary.

Stanley Bragg architects are working with EWSCGP on the project.
