Hammerson press forward with Silverburn expansion
Published:  25 August, 2010

The £20m expansion of Silverburn shopping centre in Pollok, Glasgow will go ahead despite the takeover of the centre in December

The previous owners Retail Property Holdings had applied for planning permission last summer before they sold the centre to Hammerson and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in a £297m deal in December.

Phillipa Zieba, assistant director retail development at Hammerson said: “Silverburn is a strong shopping destination with huge potential to attract shoppers from Glasgow and beyond.

“Over the last six months we have been reviewing Silverburn in terms of the store and restaurant offer and catchment opportunities and are confident that Silverburn can offer more in terms of new stores and the potential for a leisure offer.”

Plans to extend the shopping centre will see one anchor store and 10 smaller units added to the retail complex which is already the largest regional shopping development in Scotland, with 1m sq ft of retail space.

Hammerson are pressing forward with the plans for the centre's final phase and are working closely with Glasgow City Council to secure planning permission by the autumn.

The centre, which opened in 2007 and attracts almost 14m customers per year, is anchored by Debenhams, Marks & Spencer, New Look, Next and Tesco Extra.
