Westfield has revealed that the £1.45bn Stratford City shopping centre in east London will open in September next year.

The announcement was made in Westfield’s half year results briefing, where it was also confirmed that 70 per cent of the space is now either leased or committed.

Michael Gutman, Westfield UK managing director, said: “Westfield London is continuing to record very strong footfall and sales growth and is set to exceed total sales of £800m in only its second year of trade.

“The flagship stores, great design, diverse dining experiences, cinemas and live entertainment are continuing to draw customers from far and wide and the level of tourists at the centre during the summer has been exceptional with footfall most weeks up over double digits on the prior year.”

Westfield also announced that total sales for the first half of 2010 at Westfield London, which has now been open for 22 months, were up 23.7 per cent.

Westfield London has recently signed a host of new retailers including Dior Homme, the UK’s first Gilly Hicks (part of the Abercrombie & Fitch Group), a Miss Sixty boutique dedicated to denim, and a DKNY menswear store.

The UK portfolio of eight shopping centres was 98.8 per cent leased at the end of June 2010.
