The £180m Rathbone Market scheme, which forms a key part of redevelopment plans to Canning Town centre, has been given the go ahead.
Planning permission has been given for the scheme, led by English Cities Fund – a JV between Muse, Legal & General and the Homes & Communities Agency – and the London Borough of Newham. The scheme, within the Thames Gateway and Olympic areas, includes 30,000 sq ft of retail space, apartments, a library, and other community facilities. There will also be public realm improvements.
The 680,000-sq ft Rathbone Market scheme will be one of the first sites to be developed within a wider masterplan framework that sets out a long-term strategy for the regeneration of the area. The project is being delivered in partnership with Newham Council and the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation.
Duncan Cumberland, development director at Muse/English Cities Fund, said: “This is the culmination of three years’ negotiation with all stakeholders and will allow us to press forward with our proposals which will completely transform this historic London market.”
Clive Dutton, Newham Council’s executive director for regeneration, planning and property, said: “This is an important milestone in transforming Newham into a place where people choose to live, work and stay.
