St Nicholas Gate Retail Park revamp revised

Published:  22 April, 2010

The Royal Mail Pension Plan has submitted revised plans by for a £10m upgrade and extension of St Nicholas Gate Retail Park in Carlisle.

Royal Mail Pension Plan has gone back to the planning committee at Carlisle City Council in a bid to address initial concerns expressed about the design of the scheme when plans were first considered earlier this year.

Outline planning permission for the proposals was granted in November 2006 and the current application seeks approval of the details approved by that permission.

Trevor Adey, associate director at Savills, the fund's planning advisor, said: "St Nicholas Gate Retail Park is a key gateway location on the approach to the city centre and this redevelopment will not only provide an enhanced scheme that will attract new retailers to Carlisle, but also drive further investment along London Road.

"The proposals have been refined to what we believe is an excellent solution that will bring the appearance and overall standard of the park up-to-date, whilst fitting in sensitively with the surroundings."

Changes to the planning proposals include a more varied palette of materials and the introduction of subtle colours to reflect the overall setting. New detailing has also been added to break up the elevations and to add visual interest. In addition, a consistent design theme has been adopted across all of the proposed new units and the existing units, which will also be upgraded.
