Union Square hosts UK's first Shopping Centre Grand Prix

Published:  21 April, 2010

The UK’s first ever Shopping Centre Grand Prix took place at Hammerson’s Union Square last weekend (17-18 April 2010). The 61 metre track was located in the atrium area and included sweeping turns, chicanes and hairpins. Using the latest in radio control car technology, the cars reached speeds of up to 35mph.

Union Square shoppers also got the chance to take part using similar versions of the racing cars, which were sponsored by Union Square tenants including Pizza Hut, Cotswold Outdoor and Cineworld.

The event attracted thousands of spectators and over 80 competitors took part.

Penny Godfrey, marketing manager for Union Square said: “Hosting the Grand Prix has been a great experience. As well as seeing the drivers in action, shoppers come down to Union Square to take part during the public racing slots and there was a real buzz in the centre.”
