Land Securities and Hammerson’s Cabot Circus in Bristol is the only UK retail scheme to have made it to the shortlist for the 2010 EMEA Awards for Excellence awarded by the Urban Land Institute.
The awards panel said Cabot Circus had re-established the city of Bristol as the regional capital of South-West Britain. The retail-led mixed use project was completed in collaboration with the City Council to deliver new public realm spaces and 140 new shops across a 16-hectare site, integrated into the city streets.
The 2010 ULI finalists were selected by a jury of international development and design experts chaired by Capital & Counties MD Ian Hawksworth and including Andrew Gould, chief executive of Jones Lang LaSalle’s English business.
Other retail schemes included in the 16-strong shortlist of schemes across Europe, the Middle East and Africa were Multi Development’s Beursplein in Rotterdam, Aldar’s Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, and ING Real Estate Development’s Zlote Tarasy in Warsaw.
Jury chairman Ian Hawksworth said: “The awards finalists illustrate that well-designed, well-built projects can thrive even in dark economic times. Perhaps now more than ever, the ULI Awards for Excellence program reminds us of the key difference that responsible land use development can make, in terms of longevity and overall community sustainability.”
