The Irish planning apeals board, an Bord Pleanála, has given approval for Chartered Land's Dublin Central scheme, clearing the way for John Lewis' first store outside the UK.

Joe O'Reilly's Chartered Land is celebrating victory in its long battle to redevelop the Carlton Cinema site on O'Connell St, after consent was granted for an 800,000-sq ft retail development, anchored by a John Lewis store.

The original plans have been amended substantially with the overall height of the project reduced from 13 storeys to six. In addition the layout has been amended to protect a number of buildings of historic importance, including 14-17 Moore Street where the Easter Rising of 1916 came to a bloody end.

The amended consent allows for 83 retails units as well as the John Lewis store, 14 cafés and 22 apartments, with 769 car parking spaces. Chartered Land has given a provisional opening date of 2016.
