Waitrose trials C-store format in Cambridge

Waitrose is to trial its new convenience store format in Cambridge, taking 3,000 sq ft at 6-8 Fitzroy Street, on a 15-year lease from Invista Real Estate Investment Management.

Waitrose will combine the two units to open a Sunday-trading convenience store, its first smaller format convenience store, this summer as part of its plans to increase presence in the UK’s convenience sector.

The property, located close to the Grafton Centre, was previously occupied by Professional Cookware and The Pier, which both fell into administration over the course of 2008.

Jo Scott, head of retail at Invista, said: “By creatively working these vacant unit layouts, we have produced a unit for which there is occupier demand and secured a strong covenant on a long lease term. We are delighted to have been involved in the opening of the first Waitrose convenience store in Cambridge which we believe will support a large and affluent catchment and will perform well for us.”
