Threadneedle wins consent for Eccles redevelopment

Threadneedle Property Investments has been granted outline planning consent for the redevelopment of Eccles Shopping Centre in Manchester. The scheme will provide a new foodstore and car park, improvements to the rest of the centre and new pedestrian links.
At the same meeting, Salford City Council also approved Tesco's plans for a competing store at West One retail park, a nearby out of town site, which will be referred to the Secretary of State.
Threadneedle's plans represent the first phase of a wider regeneration programme for Eccles and will include the partial redevelopment of the town's shopping centre, taking two retail units and the market to the north west of the centre to create a new 79,115-sq ft foodstore. New space for the market traders will be provided on Boothway where footfall is greater and displaced retail tenants will be moved into vacant units elsewhere in the centre. An operator for the foodstore is yet to be confirmed.
Threadneedle will also replace the existing run down multi storey car park with a new decked car park of 439 spaces for town centre shoppers as well as the foodstore's customers. The scheme will also retain ten existing disabled car parking spaces on Castle Street.
Threadneedle was advised by Indigo Planning, and director Tim Waring said: "The development plan and regeneration strategy for Salford is specifically supportive of retail led regeneration in Eccles town centre. These proposals will deliver significant direct economic and social benefits, offering better customer choice, a reduction in the level of town centre retail vacancies and job creation. Threadneedle's plans will also result in spin off benefits for the existing operators in the town centre and act as a catalyst for future investment."
