Coplan Estates and Denne Construction have been selected as preferred development partner by Canterbury City Council for the £50m mixed use redevelopment of a key site in the heart of Herne Bay on the north Kent coast.
Initial proposals for the site include a new 60,000-sq ft food store, additional retail and A3 uses, medical centre and 75 residential apartments.
The appointment will allow Canterbury City Council to enter into an exclusivity period with the developer during which the scheme can be progressed with a view to submitting a planning application by the end of 2010.
The proposals are part of a wider set of ideas being pursued in the Herne Bay Area Action Plan, which is part of the Local Development Framework. This has recently been fully supported by an independent planning inspector in his inquiry report.
