Eastgate Centre cycles for charity
Published:  25 February, 2010

Fiona Bruce, BBC newscaster and Action Medical Research ambassador, accepted a cheque for £27,050 on behalf of Action Medical Research from Chris Grigg, British Land’s Chief Executive, at the company’s London offices.

The money was raised by employees of the British Land-owned Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon, Essex, who, after months of training, cycled from London to Paris in aid of Action Medical Research. This UK charity funds vital work aimed at preventing, curing and treating conditions that devastate the lives of many thousands of babies and children and their families.

British Land agreed to match the funds raised by the Eastgate team pound for pound, bringing the total amount to £54,100.

The cycle ride took place in July last year, with 16 Eastgate employees taking part. The journey lasted four days, covered 330 miles and took the team to 37 new pubs and bistros along the way. Having trained hard for seven months, between them the Eastgate cyclists lost a total of 28 stone.
