The £70m Bicester town centre regeneration scheme has been given the green light by Cherwell District Council, with construction scheduled to start later this year.
The council voted unanimously last month (18 February) to grant planning approval for the mixed-use regeneration scheme in the Oxfordshire town. The 383,000 sq ft proposal includes new retail, cafes and restaurants, a new Sainsbury’s superstore, and a seven screen cinema.
A new shopping street will link the retail and leisure anchors to the town centre’s Sheep Street and include the refurbishment of the existing Queen’s Walk shopping centre, as well as integrating a large number of historic buildings into the scheme.
An ambitious programme to deliver the scheme means that construction of the main phase is scheduled to start in the Autumn of 2010, demonstrating Sainsbury’s and Cherwell’s commitment and confidence in the town.
Enabling phases of the scheme, which will be delivered by Lyons + Sleeman + Hoare Architects, are due to begin shortly, starting with work to open and re-align the culverted River Bure.
