CSC opens 400,000-sq ft Eldon Square extension

Capital Shopping Centres and Newcastle City Council today unveil St Andrew’s Way, the new 400,000-sq ft extension to Eldon Square in Newcastle. The new mall is fully let and takes Eldon Square to 1.3 million sq ft making it the largest city centre scheme in the UK.

St Andrew’s Way is anchored by a four-storey flagship Debenhams store of 175,000 sq ft and in addition offers more than 25 new shops on two levels of modern retail space along a wide mall. The confirmed tenant list is: All Saints, Apple, Burton, Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins, Hollister, Guess, Lau’s 202, Miss Selfridge, New Look, Oasis, Paperchase, Republic, River Island, Schuh, Superdry, Tesco Metro and Topshop.

At 37,500 sq ft the New Look store is is the biggest in the UK and like all the new fashion brands it is trading with a mezzanine level. CSC director Caroline Kirby said: "I think its really interesting; you can see through to the upper levels from the ground, so all the stores are trading very visibly and are already doing well." And in terms of lettings, she added: "The major retailers were all attracted by the big, clear and flexible space we can offer them. Eldon Square has really brought back confidence in the value of prime retail."

The opening marks the culmination of a four-year programme of improvements at Eldon Square which also saw The first phase of the development, Eldon Square West, provided an additional 22,000 sq ft of new retail on Blackettbridge mall; 48,000 sq ft of retail space in St George’s Way; the construction of a new bus station and the re-landscaping of Old Eldon Square. The final stage will be a £2m project to replace the floors throughout the existing centre.

CSC's investment is already paying off and more than 30 million shopper visits are expected to the enlarged shopping centre over the next 12 months.
