New retail and leisure space set to improve Cardiff Airport

Cardiff Airport has announced plans to extend its main terminal building, with added retail and restaurant space in a bit to improve the facility.
The plans, first put forward by airport bosses in March, will link the departures and arrivals halls into one common area. The scheme has now reached the planning stage and is set to complement the refurbishment of the terminal's East Pier carried out last year, as well as the creation of a new, bilingual identity for the airport.
Plans also include relocating the security control point for departures to the first floor, above the existing arrivals hall, and the redesign and landscaping of the approach areas in front of the terminal.
Cardiff Airport managing director Patrick Duffy said: "We are seeking to do this during a time where recession has hit air traffic hard therefore challenging any business case for investing in airport development.
"Furthermore, the South Wales market is particularly challenging in terms of economic performance, which has a direct effect on our investment criteria."
