Salford City Council planners have unanimously approved a muli-million pound scheme to regenerate a 17.4 ha area in the heart of the city centre.
Planning proposals submitted by developer English Cities Fund and the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company (CSURC) include 24,000 sq m of retail, leisure and entertainment space, as well as 390 hotel rooms and the restoration of historic buildings.
Also included in the plans, which have undergone more than two years’ consultation, are cycle and pedestrian pathways, a new public square and a footbridge across the River Irwell. Funding for the project will be secured from the developers and private backers as part of the development process.
Derek Antrobus, lead member for planning at Salford City Council said: "This is the ambition of local people, local businesses, as well as the local council. We are delighted our vision to restore Salford’s city centre has been taken a step forward today by the approval of this planning application."
CSURC chief executive Chris Farrow added: "Over the last two years, Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, in close partnership with our public and private sector partners, local businesses and communities, has worked tirelessly on the planning, design and consultation for the Chapel Street area."
