Maidenhead town centre scheme unveiled

Published:  20 January, 2010

Town centre retail in Maidenhead, Berkshire, will be in for a major revamp and extension under a new masterplan unveiled by the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead.

The new masterplan for Maidenhead town centre has been opened up for public consultation. One of its key aims is to widen the town's retail offer while keeping the prime shopping areas of High Street and Irish Life's Nicholson’s Centre. To achieve this, the plan proposes a major extension to the shopping centre with a public piazza to be added to the south at Broadway. This mixed-use extension will strengthen links between the Nicholson’s Centre and High Street with King Street, Queen Street and the railway station.

The proposals are broadly in line with a scheme mooted by ING Real Estate in 2008 for the Broadway Triangle site, which envisaged 320,000 sq ft of retail, 100 new residential apartments, 75,000 sq ft of office accommodation and new underground parking for1,250 cars.

Bob Dulson, independent chairman of the Partnership for the Rejuvenation of Maidenhead, said: "This plan is a significant milestone on the way to making our town centre a vibrant heart of the community. It is the result of a huge amount of research and consultation.”
