Construction restarts at Trinity Walk, Wakefield

Published:  07 January, 2010

One of the most high profile casualties of the recession in the retail property sector, the stalled development of the 500,000-sq ft Trinity Walk shopping centre in Wakefield, got back on track this week after more than six months during which the city centre site has stood half built.

Building contractor Shepherd Construction is back on site, preparing to recommence construction after a new partnership comprising AREA Property Partners, Sovereign Land and Shepherd Construction purchased it from the administrators of the original developer, Modus, in December 2009. The revised opening date for the development is now Spring 2011.

Trinity Walk will provide more than 40 large, modern retail units and pre-lettings include include Debenhams, Sainsbury’s, Next, New Look, H&M, Peacocks, River Island, Orange, Greggs and Carphone Warehouse.

Chris Geaves, director at development manager Sovereign Land said: “It’s been a very hectic few months, but we have pulled out all of the stops to buy the site and get Shepherd back on site as quickly as possible.

“We believe that Wakefield has huge potential to become a major sub-regional shopping destination, the first choice for regular shopping trips for those that live within its catchment area – a large proportion of whom are currently travelling elsewhere because the city doesn’t have the critical mass of quality shops.”

Letting agent for Trinity Walk is Lunson Mitchenall.
