Whiteley Village Outlet faces demolition

Published:  22 December, 2009

British Land and USS have been given the green light for the £100m redevelopment of the Whiteley Village shopping centre near Fareham in Hampshire. Under the plans the existing Tesco superstore will be replaced with a Tesco Extra hypermarket and the existing outlet retail will be demolished, even though it is less than a decade old, and replaced by a convenience-led shopping mall.

Whiteley Village’s outlet centre had always languished in the shadow of nearby Gunwharf Quays while failing to meet the needs of local residents. In addition to retail, the new scheme will include restaurants, cafes and a community centre as well as a four-storey hotel. But earlier plans to include 70 new homes as part of the scheme were withdrawn.

The developers hope to be on site in the first quarter of 2011 with completion due in 2013.
