Rushmere Shopping Centre in Craigavon, County Armagh, has invested £200,000 to build a primary school in one of Uganda’s poorest regions. The Rushmere School which is due for completion this month, will educate over 400 under-privileged children.
The project is being undertaken with the help of the charity Fields of Life. Over 30 volunteers from the management and retailers at Rushmere headed off to the Ugandan community of Kibaale, 80km west of the capital Kampala, to assist the local community in setting up a strong support structure for the school as a focal point to promote sustainable development in all aspects of village life.
Before he left for Uganda, Rushmere general manager Martin Walsh said: “We are in the midst of a global downturn, but the generosity of shoppers donating to the project and the volunteers who will be giving up to a week of their own time to travel to Uganda and all their fundraising efforts has been very impressive. It is heartwarming to see that even when times are bad, people have a drive to help other in most need”.
