Movies about shopping centres are pretty thin on the ground, but this Spring there are two to look forward to. March 17 sees the UK release of Paul Blart: Mall Cop which has already been a hit in the US: it was the top-grossing move in screens across the USA during January. And it will be followed by Observe & Report, another movie about a shopping centre security guard.
Without giving too much of the plot away, Paul Blart: Mall Cop stars Kevin James, of King of Queens and Hitch fame, as a mild-mannered, dutiful family man who works as a security guard in a New Jersey mall.
He has always wanted to be a police officer but keeps failing the physical exam because he is overweight. One day, a gang of organized criminals put the mall under siege and take hostages. Blart becomes trapped inside, and because of his sense of duty, refuses to leave. He thus becomes the police department’s eyes on the inside and attempts to stop the criminals on his own.

The film grossed $64.8m in its first two weeks of release and appears on its way to surpass $100 million. “It’s just a very funny film,” said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony. “It’s not only a great family film,
it really is a film that everyone loves.”
