Standard Life floats plan for Churchill Square extension

Published:  07 February, 2009

Brighton’s Churchill Square shopping centre could be set for a major expansion under new plans drawn up by the centre’s landlord Standard Life Investments and Brighton & Hove City Council. The two want to see the shopping centre, which was last refurbished in the 1990s, extended southwards towards the seafront to facilitate the development of a new, world class convention centre and a high quality hotel and other new leisure facilities.

Standard Life and the council are initially seeking to appoint consultants through the open European Procurement Procedures to work on detailed feasibility studies, and they expect these to be concluded by the end of this year. Further design work will then be required before a planning application could be lodged for the redevelopment of the site.

Daniel McHugh, investment director at Standard Life Investments, said: “We look forward to working on the proposals which have the potential to deliver a unique development of exceptional quality, transforming this area of Brighton.”

And Cllr Mary Mears, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, added: “This development will put Brighton back at the forefront of the international conventions market and secure thousands of jobs.

“We want a beautifully-designed landmark building which performs to the highest environmental and technical specifications. The overall development will radically improve the facilities and appearance of one the most important places in the entire city, creating a beautiful new focal point on the seafront.”
