If the shoe fits, wear it

Manchester's Triangle shopping centre saw its footfall figures go sky high during a two-week promotion that gave shoppers the chance to win a trip to the Big Apple.

Running from August 11 to 25, the initiative featured a gigantic eight foot tall red stiletto filled with dollar bills placed in the centre. Shoppers had to guess how many notes were in the shoe and the closest estimate won tickets to New York.

Based on the same period last year, the initiative saw an 18 per cent year-on-year increase in footfall numbers. And an ongoing programme of events and marketing activities at the centre, has ensured this uplift in footfall is not a one-off during these difficult economic times. From January 1 to June 30 2008, the centre saw a 21.5 per cent year-on-year increase in footfall against a national 2.85 per cent deficit.

Michelle Atack, marketing manager for Triangle, said: "The promotion is a great way to drive even more people to the centre and we're always thinking of clever and creative ways to encourage footfall.

"Our figures and ideas, yet again, demonstrate that we're helping our stores in difficult trading conditions."
