St John's Liverpool |
Liverpool City Council has approved Land Securities' plans for the redevelopment of the St John’s Centre, Liverpool’s largest covered shopping centre originally built by the developer in 1969. The centre will now undergo a substantial refurbishment and extension which will increase its overall size from 360,000 to 480,000 sq ft.
The new designs include a double-height retail mall which will dramatically change the internal and external appearance of the centre. The new mall will add a further 90,000 sq ft of retail space, attracting new retailers to the centre and re-establishing its position as a value/mid market shopping centre.
The malls will be extensively refurbished to include new facilities, lighting and access, with the established food offer being relocated to a new catering area at the first-floor level overlooking Clayton Square. The historic St John’s Market within the centre will also be relocated to a purpose built 21st century Market Hall situated at Williamson Square.
Land Securities plans to begin in early 2009 and the new scheme will be completed in spring 2013. Retail development director Nick Davis said: “We are pleased that the redevelopment of the St John’s Centre can now get underway. Land Securities is confident that we can bring this popular shopping destination into the 21st Century, giving it the refurbishment that is needed to attract more shoppers and enhancing its value/mid market offer at this exciting time of retail renaissance in the city.”
