Graeme Newman, managing director of Sovereign Land, passed away on Thursday 17 April 2008 at the Princess Alice Hospital in Esher.

Graeme had a huge circle of friends in property and beyond. He will be remembered by all as one of the true gentlemen in the industry, combining shrewd and intelligent property business acumen with a courteous, fiercely loyal, witty and immensely likeable personality.

A long and distinguished career in the retail property industry started with six years at Healey & Baker in the 1970s, followed by seven years as an associate at Bernard Thorpe & Partners, during which time he worked on various shopping centre developments including The MetroCentre, Ealing Broadway Centre and White Lion Walk in Guildford.

In 1985 Graeme became a director of Gerald Ronson's Heron Property Corporation, and was responsible for the development of a number of large shopping centres including The Marlands in Southampton and Merchants Quay in Cork.

While at Heron, Graeme met his friend and subsequent business partner Tim Binnington. In 1989 they set up Sovereign Land and carried through a number of successful joint ventures.

Graeme was a London Society rugby referee, a member of the MCC and president of Esher Cricket Club. Diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2006 and given a very limited life expectancy, he put up a typically robust fight against the disease.

He will be very much missed by all who knew him.

Graeme leaves his wife Lizzie, daughter Victoria and son Tom (now working for Atisreal).
